Two years ago I was elected to City Council on the back of a heartfelt election address that talked about male suicide. That same year I read my election address out during my maiden speech to the chamber, which then voted unanimously to implement a landmark Suicide Prevention Strategy.
I concluded my speech: “As the largest council is Europe, we should strengthen our resolve as a city and have a zero tolerance to suicide. We should aim to smash the stigma surrounding mental health, and as the second city become the gold standard, for the rest of the country to follow.”
