🎊 🇬🇧 FOUR YEARS AGO! WE MADE HISTORY! 🇬🇧 🎊
Four years ago we took on the establishment and won!
Not because we dislike Europe, but because we dislike the EU. Not because we dislike foreigners, but because we’re open to the world. Not to become poorer, but to promote free trade around the globe.
Brexit is a golden opportunity to make a positive impact on the world stage again, helping billions of people around the world to prosper alongside us.
I’ll never forget that night, walking into the ICC counting hall at 11pm to witness a sea of blue “Stronger-IN” shirts, with only a minority of red vote leavers. We were completely outnumbered and overwhelmed – EVERYONE expected us to loose.
We were unable to use phones inside the count, cut off from the outside world relying on hearsay and rumours. One being that prominent leavers were already conceding defeat on the news. This didn’t just lower morale but it meant pretentious remainders walking around joyfully laughing to one another.
That was untill the Labour MP walked over to the Longbridge (and Frankley) ballot boxes being opened. I’ll never forget the reaction as the papers poured onto the counting table. “Wow!” said one of the counters, “we’ve NEVER seen boxes this full before!”
As they counted through the night, the MP’s faces went from pale white of shock into red plums of frustration. None of them (or us) could believe what was happening. It was clear that the leave vote had been massively underestimated, as many working class areas who had been ignored and taken for granted for generations, came out in droves!
We then heard rumours of an upset in the north (Sunderland) but we couldn’t confirm. We waited for the first phase of the count to be over, before rushing into the hallway to check news coverage. It was pandemonium! Everything was so tight, it could go either way! The tension was immense!
As the night progressed, slowly the number of blue remainer shirts started to disappear from the hall as results from across the Midlands appeared on the big screen showing a strong vote to LEAVE. Suddenly the mood in the hall had changed, now it was us walking around smiling joyfully to one another.
By the end of the night there were no remainers left in the hall but a small handful of leavers at the front. We had Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims and Jews, people from all walks of life and all political parties, huddled together at the front of the stage for the declaration.
Birmingham, the UKs second city, Labour run and Labour dominated, had expected to vote overwhelmingly to remain, but instead we voted to LEAVE, in what was the biggest political upset this city has ever seen, in the largest election turnout ever!
Shortly after, we checked our phones and was astonished to read results from across the country. We went down to the Starbucks and told the waiter to switch the tv on. David Dimbleby appeared. “Turn it up please!” We said to the waiter. The words we heard next will stay with us forever:
“We can now say that the decision taken in 1975 by this country to join the common market has been reversed by this referendum. We are absolutely clear now, that there is no way the Remain side can win. The British people have spoken and their answer is clear…. WE’RE OUT!!”
We erupted in joy with once political rivals hugging each other, it was a truly remarkable moment!
I then noticed three remainers sitting in the far corner, so I walked over to commiserate them and congratulate them on a tightly fought campaign. The response I received was astonishing. They refused to talk to me, didn’t want to shake my hand, and sanctimoniously said “we stand for better things than you do” I couldn’t believe their attitude!
As I caught the train home, I couldn’t help but laugh about it. Little did I know that this attitude would dominate politics for the next four years and become the cornerstone of the modern left as they tried everything to overturn the largest democratic mandate this country has ever seen.
I look at the Labour Party today, still confused by it’s worse election defeat since 1935, still learning nothing based on the review papers they’ve published and still wilfully smearing and slandering people online, rather then making any legitimate, reasonable or logical arguments (both economically and socially). I cannot help but remember those haunting words of a former Prime Minister: “NOTHING HAS CHANGED!”
🇬🇧 HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!! 🇬🇧
